SMIT (Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology) is a research centre of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It is located on the VUB Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus and is part of the Department of Media and Communication Studies. SMIT is also embedded as a core group in imec, Flanders world-leading R&D and innovation hub in nano-electronics and digital technologies.

For 30 years, SMIT specialises in socio-economic and policy research on ICT innovation in Media, Cities, and Healthcare. Our team consists of over 90 senior and junior researchers with a wide variety of disciplinary backgrounds and nationalities.

Job domain

In the framework of the Pilot Project Stars4Media, a position is currently open for a full-time job as junior/medior researcher in the field of Business Transformation of News media/media innovation and collaboration, within the Stars4Media core team.

Stars4Media is a project supporting media innovation through collaborative exchanges between media organizations and media professionals from different European countries. Between the First and the Second Edition (still ongoing until June 2022), a total of 51 innovative initiatives have been financially supported, involving 285 media professionals from all around the European Union. The new phase, Stars4Media NEWS, will aim at long-lasting and structural business transformation of European media companies.

Work tasks will include:

  • Contribution to the project’s evaluation strategy and implementation, including definition of evaluation concept and methodology, evaluation of the supported initiatives and overall action, and official narrative/technical reporting to the European Commission;
  • Coordination, together with the Stars4Media project manager, of all key activities and internal processes for ensuring effective implementation of the project and effective dissemination of results throughout its entire duration;
  • Contribution to the outreach activities for leveraging the new interest from European media companies and media professionals and nurturing and further expanding the existing stakeholders’ community.

Your profile:

  • Relevant experience in the field of European media, Business Transformation of News media / media innovation and collaboration;
  • Knowledge of the EU media sector’s dynamics and of media transformation/innovation trends;
  • Knowledge of European Projects’ implementation
  • Degree in Communication Sciences, Political Sciences, EU Studies or relevant for the job description;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and knowledge of at least another EU language;
  • Excellent time management and planning skills as well as precision in execution of tasks;
  • Excellent command of the Office suite as well as Google docs and sheets;
  • Flexible attitude in working on a multitude of tasks in a challenging environment;
  • A reasonably developed network of professional contacts in the EU news media sector is a plus;
  • Work experience in innovation departments of media companies, media networks/associations, media think tanks/consultancies is a plus;
  • Experience in evaluation of media projects (possibly media innovation, exchange or collaborative projects) is a plus.
