New projects at SMIT (May 2022 – September 2022)

A brief overview of the projects with SMIT involvement that were launched in the period between May 2022 and September 2022.

LEARN: DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL ASSESSMENTS FOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING AND IMPACT ON CHILDREN’S HEALTH

LEARN aims to evaluate the air quality and levels of exposure of children in schools in three different countries (Denmark,  Belgium  and  Greece),  where  cohorts  of  children  in  the  range  of  9  to  12  years  old will  be recruited. Start-of-the-art technologies will be used to characterize the indoor and outdoor air pollution and evaluate the exposure and behavioral effects of air pollutants in children attending school. Novel sensors will be developed related to ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds, and IoT connected air purifiers will be installed to reduce and remediate the indoor air pollution. Deeper insights into the effects and mechanism of air pollutants will be collected by performing in vitro and in vivo assessments of toxicity, C.elegans will be used as a biosensor for indoor air quality and novel organ-on-a-chip models of lung and skin will be developed and applied. The societal impact of the project will be maximized through deliberative policy making processes on health promotion strategies with stakeholders from the cohorts.

SOCIO-BEE

SOCIO-BEE is a Horizon 2020 project that aims to increase the capacity of urban communities to adopt more sustainable behaviours and act in favour of the environment, reducing air pollution. To reach this goal, SOCIO-BEE relies on citizen science, through which citizens, together with scientists, public and private organisations can measure and analyse air quality and co-create long-lasting solutions making use of new technologies (e.g., wearable and stationary sensors, drones). Through an example from nature, the project uses the metaphor of bees and how they work together towards a common objective, to incentivize communities and individuals to contribute towards climate action. The project runs from October 2021 till September 2024.

TITAN: Tracking Information in Quantum Networks

The aim of TITAN is to deliver an open, distributed and citizen engaging ecosystem which empowers the citizen itself to conduct effective and efficient investigations for understanding whether statements at hand are true. Empowerment is achieved by means of intelligent coaching on the process of investigation. AI-driven, intuitive and personalised ‘question-and-response’ interaction will set the attention of the investigating citizen on the logical interpretation and critical assessment of the implied reasoning and arguments in the statement at hand while directing the citizen in the appropriate use of suitable fact-checking and media literacy tools and services.

TransMIXR

TransMIXR’s ambition is to strengthen the democratic mission and competiveness of the European Cultural and Creative Sector (CCS).  Business models have been shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing dominance of non-European platforms. Hence, the project wants to focus on cross-border collaborations between media organisations and inclusion of citizens. By combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) and eXtended Reality (XR), TransMIXR wants to advance the state-of-the art in media production, delivery and consumption. By introducing leading edge technologies and experiences built around public values TransMIXR wishes to inform and entertain, to connect and inspire, to educate and empower.
