The VUB chair “Data Protection On The Ground” (DPOG) was set up with the aim to stimulate understanding of and research into best practices for personal data protection in organizations. The chair is hosted by imec-SMIT at the VUB, in collaboration with the research group LSTS (Law, Science Technology & Society).
Scoping the state of the art
Starting from October 2018, researchers under the flag of the chair have made first steps in scoping the state of the art of personal data protection in four sectors: the media sector, the financial sector, smart cities, and the health sector.
The chair’s annual report from 2019 presents the activities that were carried out to that end, from round table discussions for each of those sectors, to engagement with relevant academic debates at conferences and in publications, and societal outreach through blogging and social media. Several of these activities have led to further research, such as a study into the use of personal data for personalisation in the Belgian media (in Dutch).
