The Human City Conference

On December 14th, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel organizes the ‘The Human City’ conference. We would like to send you an update of the program that day and we kindly invite you to register, if you have not already done so.

The event

Major demographic, economic and technological challenges are coming to the city. What is a humane future for our cities? What should our policy makers focus on? What can citizens achieve themselves? What are scientific insights that can help the social and political debate?

VUB professors from various disciplines contributed to a unique ‘election manifesto’ with 30 concrete proposals for a city on a human scale. Their joint book The Human City (‘De Humane Stad‘) is being launched at this conference. Experts such as Cathy Macharis, Michel Maus, Eric Corijn, Pieter Ballon and Michael Ryckewaert will propose their ideas to a series of guests who care deeply about our cities and their future.

With keynotes from artist Arne Quinze, writer Martijn De Waal and entrepreneur Frank Bekkers.

Mayors Bart Somers (Mechelen), Wim Dries (Genk) and Veerle Heeren (Sint-Truiden) will take part in debates about adequate city policy-making, citizen participation and the use of smart data in the city.

We conclude with Nathalie Crutzen and Brussels state secretary Bianca Debaets. An overview of our program can be found here.
