Jean-Claude Burgelman

J.C. Burgelman is project leader at the ICT unit of the JRC-IPTS, (on leave from his position as full professor of communication technology policy at the Free University of Brussels). He has degrees in social sciences (BA, Phd) and in science and technology policy (MA) from the Free University of Brussels. He directed at the VUB the research centre Studies on Media, Information and Telecommunications, which is a centre of excellence in Belgium.
His main research activities concern the social and economic impacts of information society technologies (from the point of view of innovation dynamics). At IPTS (http://fiste.jrc.es) he leads several projects on the future of the Information Society in Europe: vision and knowledge base (see http://fistera.jrc.es), the potential of IST for the new entrants, the outlook for 3G and 4G in Europe, the impact of
Ambient Intelligence technologies on health and e-governance, etc. He also sits on the High Level Socio-Economic Expert Group of DG Infso, chaired by
Commissioner Liikanen. He published widely on these subjects (books and articles).

Sofie De Rouck
Sofie De Rouck achieved her nursing degree in the year 2000. Subsequently, she was professionally active as a paediatric nurse. In 2004 she graduated at the Free University of Brussels as a licentiate in Medical Social Sciences. In October of the same year she started working at the VUB as a scientific researcher, focusing on e-Health issues. She was involved in different e-health projects exploring user-related aspects of the design, developement and implementation of telehomecare-applications: ‘Optimalisering van het zorgtraject van thuiszorgpatiënten met behulp van telematicatoepassingen’, ‘The future of independent living systems in the EU’, ‘Coplintho’, ‘IM3’.
From october 2006 Sofie De Rouck started as a FWO-aspirant with her Phd research in the Department of Medical Sociology and Health Sciences. The impact of the internet as an information- and communicationmedium on the experiences of parents of children admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. The mediating effect of the illness trajectory on the use of online information and communication will be elaborated. Specific attention will be paid to the impact on the parent-healthcare professional relationship.

Karl Verstrynge
Karl Verstrynge (Brugge, 1973) is sedert november 2006 verbonden aan de vakgroep Wijsbegeerte en Moraalwetenschappen en de Vakgroep Communicatiewetenschappen van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Hij publiceert over het existentialisme, het Duits Idealisme en godsdienstfilosofische thema’s, alsook over media-ethische thema’s, in het bijzonder met betrekking tot virtuele media en ethiek. Hij doceert de vakken Media en Ethiek (LW-SCOM-11976), Filosofie en Ethiek van de Technologische cultuur (LW-FILO-11987) en Ethische Aspecten van de Consumptie en de Reclame (LW-SCOM-13923).
