Abstract: The vision for the Future Internet encompasses overcoming a diverse range of technical challenges ranging from scalability to adding more intelligence to networks and services in order to adapt the ecosystem to the varying requirements of users and devices. This technological evolution will allow for the emergence of diverse new business models and industrial structures. Technological, business and social aspects will thus gear the success and sustainability of the Future Internet. Taking in consideration on-going European research activities, it becomes relevant at this point to characterise within these research projects the activities undertaken around the design of business ecosystems and assess whether these meet the technical and operational challenges of Future Internet architectures and deliver the appropriate incentives for stakeholders. In this paper, European projects approved in Call 1, under Challenge 1, Objective 1 are surveyed and we conclude that they still depict technological solutions to be introduced as part of a traditional business model configuration characterised by vertically integrated value chains and concentrated assets and cost models. Although, Future Internet capabilities seem to deliver the value to formulate new and disruptive business models, possibly disintegrated, horizontal structures and with emergent business roles, these were not considered in the context of the reviewed projects and thus should be tackled in upcoming research initiatives.
