A sustainable development policy needs a broad support among the Belgian population. International comparisons show that Belgium is investing significantly strong in the strengthening of public support, for instance through sensibilization and global education. However, this policy is currently without evaluation or is not results-oriented driven, because little is known about the evolution of the support among target groups and sectors, about supply and demand of awareness-raising and other activities, and about the impact of these interventions.
The research platform Public Support Sustainable Development will: (1) in a more systematic way map the public support for sustainable development among the Belgian population and in certain sectors (politics, business, and education), (2) contribute to a better alignment between demand and supply of support strengthening interventions, (3) improve methodologies for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions, (4) conduct research on the role of the media in public support, and (5) conduct research on the potential of innovative digital communication strategies for strengthening public support.
