Karen Willems
Karen has a bachelor degree in social nursing, as well as a master degree in health sciences (Maastricht University, 2004). Before working at iMinds-SMIT, Karen worked as health promotion manager at the Independent Health Insurance Funds (MLOZ).

Karen's main research interest is within the field of digital healthcare innovation and the concept of living labs. Her focus is on innovative solutions tackling the societal challenges via independent living technologies, prevention and self-management services, etc. 

Currently, Karen is coordinating the Program Office of the Flanders' Care demonstration projects at iMinds-iLab.o. She also develops methodological support activities for care living labs within the Flemish Care Living Lab program (www.zorgproeftuinen.be - www.carelivinglabs.eu). Next to that she builds upon her expertise in both user research and business modeling to support SME's in translate their digital healthcare ideas into succesfull business opportunities via living lab research.

Karen's previous work was on the feasibility of setting up a living lab in the domain of living and care (contract research), cross-border living lab collaboration in home care (Apollon pilot), a study concerning the feasibility of a smart bed (IWT feasibility study), the AIR project (ICON), the oCareClouds project (ICON) and the European Care4Balance project (AAL).
