Katleen Gabriels holds masters degrees in Germanic Languages (KULeuven, 2005) and Moral Sciences (Ghent University, 2009). In 2007, she took part in the Erasmus Programme and studied at Helsinki University during one year.

In 2009 Katleen graduated summa cum laude with a thesis on morality in the virtual world, more specifically on moral emotions in the three-dimensional social virtual world ‘Second Life’.

Katleen joined the SMIT-team in October 2009 to work on a PhD on morality and ethics in social virtual worlds. The doctoral research project is titled "Living Virtual Lives: From Moral Practices to a Theory of Ethics in Social Virtual Worlds". "Living Virtual Lives" is an interdisciplinary study, combining a media-sociological (descriptive ethics) and philosophical study (normative ethics) of online moral practices and reflection.
