Joke Beyl holds a Master in Media and Communication Studies (2005) and a Master in Cultural Sciences (2006), both obtained at the Free University Brussels (VUB). She prefaced her professional career with an internship at the Fabre Museum in Montpellier, France, from October 2006 until January 2007, where she was involved in preparing exhibitions, communication-oriented and educational projects. From April 2007 until October 2008, she worked as a researcher in several Cultuurlab-projects on new media and culture at SMIT. Since October 2008, Joke Beyl is a teaching assistant at the department of Media and Communication Studies at the Free University Brussels. She is preparing a PhD on the construction of artisthood in the online encounter of blogging writers and their readers. Her main research interests include the social meaning of new media for the production, mediation and consumption of art and culture; the conceptualization and performance of artisthood through (new) media; narrative analysis of self-conceptualisation in weblogs.
