Jo Pierson has been Researcher and Senior Researcher at SMIT - part of IBBT (Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology) - since 1996 and holds a PhD in Social Science (Media & Communication Studies) since 2003. He has been lecturing on undergraduate and masters courses at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) in the Department of Communication Studies (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy), covering socio-economic issues relating to the information society, digital media marketing and qualitative research methods.
His core scientific expertise is situated in the field of user empowerment and innovation strategic research on the meaning and use of new media. In this domain he has been involved as (co)promoter and/or researcher in over 35 national and international research projects. His research focus is on involving users in the technological development process based on ethnographic study and Living Lab approach. Other research areas include online privacy and dataveillance, co-creativity, digital media marketing, offline-online communities, interactive digital television, e-inclusion issues and ICT in small businesses. On these topics he has published over 25 national and international peer-reviewed articles, presented over 40 papers and authored over 35 research reports. He is editor of the book ‘Innovating for and by users’ (2008), and co-editor for the book ‘Digital Television in Europe’ (2008). He is Chair of the Communication Policy and Technology section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and member of the Living Lab Leadership Group of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL). Jo Pierson has been an expert for several government initiatives regarding ICT design and usage on European, Belgian and Flemish level. He is, and has been, involved in a number of international research networks (e.g. COST-ICT 298, COST-TIST 269, EMTEL).
