Vacancy for a full time HCI Researcher
(ref. iMinds/SMIT/User)
The research centre iMinds-SMIT of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel offers a full-time research position in the field of Social Sciences, more in particular socio-technical studies on ICT and media.
iMinds - SMIT (Studies on Media, Information and Telecommunication) specialises since 20 years in research on media and ICT from a social scientific perspective. We are a team of about 70 researchers. We are part of the iMinds research centre, an institute founded by the Flemish Government to stimulate ICT innovation.
More information about iMinds-SMIT and our activities can be found @ www.smit.vub.ac.be.
Description of research domain:
The iMinds-SMIT user empowerment cluster is involved in researching and developing socially relevant and feasible innovations in areas like education, (health)care, gaming, wellbeing, media,…. The success of media and technology innovations highly depends on the introduction and domestication of the ICT applications in the life and context of the targeted user. When people start using new types of services and applications, their practices and relations with their social and psychical environment change. In our research, we look at current user practices and find ways to anticipate on future practices in product and service design. We do this by involving the user in all phases of the R&D process, by making use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, with an emphasis on the latter. As a result, we mainly do applied research, but sufficient attention also goes to the theoretical underpinnings of our work.
We are looking for a dynamic and flexible HCI researcher that can investigate current experiences and practices, and critically reflect on the technical choices to be made.
Tasks include:
• Literature research
• Field research: mainly ethnography (observations & interviews)
• Design research: cocreation workshops, persona & scenario development, evaluating (mixed-fidelity) product and service prototypes,...
• Dissemination: writing reports, presenting results on project meetings and conferences, publishing in scientific journals, etc.
• Day-to-day project management
Qualifications:
• A degree in social or human Sciences (Communication Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Pedagogy…) or in product development.
• Good knowledge of social research methods, with an emphasis on qualitative research.
• Knowledge or affinity with ICT
• To have an interest in short and medium term projects (6 months to 2 years)
• Good knowledge of Dutch (mother tongue) and (academic) English (both oral and written)
• To be able to write scientific reports and research proposals.
• To be able to work independently within team, with strong social skills
• Research experience is a plus
• Knowledge or affinity with (health)care, education or gaming is a plus
We offer:
• An interesting full-time research position in a stimulating work environment, where you can be part of high-tech innovation projects
• Enthusiastic and young co-workers and a pleasant environment.
• Day-to-day support and project guidance
• A place for personal involvement and input
• Flexible working conditions
• Multiple social benefits (vacation: 35d, compensation for the commute, hospitalization insurance and a supplementary pension insurance)
• Salary in accordance with the job market
Applications (in English) are to be sent electronically as soon as possible to Hans De Canck (Hans.De.Canck@vub.ac.be). When applying, a motivation is expected to be included with the CV.
