"Are we being served? Reflections on Public Service Broadcasting in transition"At the edge of a converging digital era, new and old media players alike have to (re-)invent themselves. This is also the case for Public Service Broadcasters. With a view of the renewed management contract for the VRT, the aim of this third session of SMIT LECTURE SERIES 2010 is to discuss European Public Service Broadcasters in turmoil.
EBU Director-General Ms. Ingrid Deltenre will give a keynote on the EBU’s vision on the challenges ahead for Public Service Broadcasters in Europe. After her, two distinguished academics are invited to discuss the topic and present their views on possible ways to legitimize Public Service Broadcasters. Prof. dr. Graham Murdock will explore his ideas on the digital commons, whereas Prof. dr. Jo Bardoel addresses the transition from Public Service Broadcasters to Public Service Media. After these speeches, Pierre Drouot (VAF), Bart Temmerman (Cultuurnet), Patrick Lacroix (Vlaamse Dagbladpers) will give a brief comment from their sector’s perspective on the previous speakers’ vision on public service broadcasting in transition. The floor will then be given to the audience to enter into a debate with the speakers and discussants.
