Metaverse1 project received the Silver 2011 ITEA2 Outstanding Achievement Award
Recently the Metaverse1 project received the Silver 2011 ITEA2 Outstanding Achievement Award at the ITEA2 / Artemis co-summit in Helsinki after a final plenary project presentation. About 15 candidate projects were in the running to receive this price.
The Metaverse1 project deals with the interoperability between Virtual worlds (as for example Second Life, World of Warcraft, IMVU, Active Worlds, Google Earth and many others) and the Real world (sensors, actuators, vision and rendering, social and welfare systems, banking, insurance, travel, real estate and many others) and delivered a standardized global framework.
iMinds-SMIT researchers Koen Willaert and An Jacobs developed, in close collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, an innovative application called 'PresenceScape', which is considered one of the most outstanding usecases developed within this Metaverse1 project. PresenceScape is targeting distributed teams of office workers to support social awareness and informal communication by means of a customised 3D virtual world. The PresenceScape prototype -deploying this virtual world application in combination with a wireless sensor network- was tested and validated at iMinds-SMIT,VUB premises.
