Telenet acquires 50% of De Vijver Media - Pieter Ballon on Terzake (Dutch)
The Belgian media landscape has changed overnight.
Telenet has bought a 50% stake in De Vijver Media, after buying Finnish media group Sanoma’s shares for €26 million. They also made an additional €32 million cash investment in the firm.
De Vijver Media is the owner of television stations Vier and Vijf, as well as the production company Woestijnvis.
Telenet, a subsidiary of Liberty Global, is the main distributor of digital and analog television in Flanders.
CEO of De Vijver Media, Wouter Vandenhaute, expressed his relief and excitement in this new partnership.
Many media analysts fear that Telenet's involvement in not only the distribution of television but also its content creation might give way to pay-per-view and on-demand models of television consumption.
Pieter Ballon gave his insight on what he thinks the implications of this acquisition might be for the Flemish television audience.
