95% of young people do not use the privacy settings on social media. The readers of the Flemish newspaper, De Standaard, were invited to debate about whether young people should better protect their privacy. Ralf De Wolf and Rob Heyman (iMinds- SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) state that this line of thought is too limited, because of two reasons.

First, people don’t question the privacy policy of social media. Secondly, their policy is being used as a measure to determine whether or not young people protect their privacy, rather than looking at what young people are actually doing. By doing this we end up in the typical story of the irresponsible youth.

The research of Rob Heyman and Ralf De Wolf, and that of many others, shows that young people develop very creative ways to protect their privacy, without using the privacy settings.
