In order to function, a hospital relies on a large number of complex processes (clinical care pathways, information flows, supply of equipment, allocation of staff, etc.). It is therefore crucial – for both healthcare professionals and patients – that all these processes are matched optimally. This, however, remains a major challenge, despite the many efforts to deliver more efficient and higher quality services through time and resource optimization.

HIPS wants to take up that challenge, and develop a methodology and a set of tools that hospitals can use to analyze and optimize their operations. The patient is central to this approach. As the first case study, all the processes for hip surgery will be assessed. This will involve following the entire treatment process, from hospital admission till release, primarily focusing on the operating rooms.

In a first stage, the existing processes in two hospitals will be examined and documented. How these processes and their coordination can be optimized will then be the subject of a further review.

HIPS focuses primarily on solutions used to measure and monitor KPIs, on technologies allowing us to examine and improve processes (through 'process mining') and on technologies capable of simulating, analyzing and assessing the impact of the proposed alternative processes on the basis of specific indicators (safety, quality, cost efficiency).

Within the project SMIT focuses on developing a method to measure patient experience, an important KPI, before and after surgery.
