Mark Verheyden is a Teaching Assistant and PhD Student Communication Scieces at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). As an affiliated researcher at SMIT (Research Center on Studies in Media, Information and Telecommunication), he is an active member of the user research cluster. Mark holds a Master's degree in History (magna cum laude), a Master's degree in Communication Sciences (summa cum laude) and is in the process of obtaining a Master of Science in European Integration and Development.

In his PhD-research, Mark examines the debates between scholars and professionals on the introduction and use of social media for internal communication activities. More specifically, he tries to discover how the introduction of new communication tools affects notions of power, hierarchy and control in organizational settings. Mark is a member of several professional expert groups at various organizations like STIMA (Stimulating Marketing, section internal & employer branding) and B&O (Business & Optimism).

Currently, Mark is in the process of preparing several papers that are related to his PhD research. He has recently been accepted to attain a PhD seminar, organized by Aarhus University (Digital Humanities Lab/Netlab) in Denmark, on the study of the web and web archives. In 2012, he succesfully completed a review assignment for the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research (JTAER).

With regard to teaching assignments, Mark has been active in the organization and support of both theoretical and methodological courses since the end of 2011 onwards. He currently coordinates a seminar on Strategic Corporate Communication and Marketing. As for the methodoligical courses, Mark has been put in charge of the practical aspects related to the seminar on the use of quantitative methods in communication research.
