In 2013 Lien started working on a PhD on the moral attitudes of children and preadolescents concerning online privacy, funded by FWO (Fund for Scientific Research in Flanders).

From September 2008 until May 2012 she was involved in several projects at SMIT related to digital culture and the digitisation and distribution of cultural content. Additional research efforts focussed on young people's changing media landscape and their overall media behaviors and attitudes.

Lien holds masters degrees in Germanic languages (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 2007) and cultural sciences (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 2008).
